چکیده

Potential visual prosodic cues for prominence and phrasing comprising eyebrow movements were manipulated using a system for audio-visual text-to-speech synthesis which has been implemented based on the KTH rule-based synthesis. Two functions of prosody (prominence and phrasing) were tested in two separate experiments. A test sentence, ambiguous in terms of an internal phrase boundary, was used for both experiments. Acoustic cues and lower face visual cues were held constant for all stimuli. Upper face cues were eyebrow movement where the eyebrows were raised on successive words in the sentence. The results indicate a general coupling between eyebrow raising and perceived prominence while suggesting a more complicated relationship between eyebrow movement and phrasing. The results also point against a tight perceptual connection between F0 and eyebrow movement indicating that selective eyebrow movement can be effective as an independent prosodic cue to prominence.

Eyebrow movement as a cue to prominence

INTRODUCTION Speech communication is inherently multimodal in nature. While the auditory modality often provides the phonetic information necessary to convey a linguistic message, the visual modality can qualify the auditory information providing segmental cues on place of articulation, prosodic information concerning prominence and phrasing and extralinguistic information such as signals for t...

Zebra finches are sensitive to prosodic features of human speech.

Variation in pitch, amplitude and rhythm adds crucial paralinguistic information to human speech. Such prosodic cues can reveal information about the meaning or emphasis of a sentence or the emotional state of the speaker. To examine the hypothesis that sensitivity to prosodic cues is language independent and not human specific, we tested prosody perception in a controlled experiment with zebra...

Prosodic elements to improve pronunciation in English language learners: A short report

The usefulness of teaching pronunciation in language instruction remains controversial. Though past research suggests that teachers can make little or no difference in improving their students’ pronunciation,  current  findings  suggest  that  second  language  pronunciation  can  improve  to  be near  native-like  with  the  implementation  of  certain  criteria  such  as  the  utilization  of...

On the Modelling of Prosodic Cues in Synthetic Speech – What are the Effects on Perceived Uncertainty and Naturalness?

In this paper we present work on the modelling of uncertainty by means of prosodic cues in an articulatory speech synthesizer. Our stimuli are embedded into short dialogues in question-answering situations in a human-machine scenario. The answers of the robot vary with respect to the intended level of (un)certainty, the independent variables are intonation (rising vs. falling) and filler (absen...

Sentence-Internal Prosody Does not Help Parsing the Way Punctuation Does

This paper investigates the usefulness of sentence-internal prosodic cues in syntactic parsing of transcribed speech. Intuitively, prosodic cues would seem to provide much the same information in speech as punctuation does in text, so we tried to incorporate them into our parser in much the same way as punctuation is. We compared the accuracy of a statistical parser on the LDC Switchboard treeb...
